Since adding a 7.1 surround sound setup to my PC gaming/man cave/guest bedroom, I've enjoyed the results so much it's sent me down the rabbit hole of home theater audio. I now have a 7.1.4 and a bunch of tactile transducers. One thing I've certainly not enjoyed about the journey though is the costs. Good speakers are expensive. Same with good AVR. Is it so much to ask that amplifiers aren't as well? Well that's where mini class D amps come in. Despite how often purists in the audio community claim you have to get expensive amps like Emotiva to just name one of the brands out there, to get good sound and power. Brands like Fosi, Aiyima, and Douk, have really started to change the game in the past couple to few years as they're releasing good amps that don't break the bank. I've had the opportunity to try amps from all 3 brands now as well as a few from more obscure brands. This is my second Douk. My other Douk is the M1-Max that is currently running my rear ceilings, but I'll be replacing it with this A5 Pro as I like it better. I wish my phone's mic was better. I almost didn't upload the vid because it's not doing this amp justice. And it couldn't even pick up the volume change. When I turned it up it it was right at the level of starting to be way too loud I thought for sure someone in the family was going to come in and ask me to turn it down, yet when I played back the vid I couldn't even notice I turned it up. I don't know enough about mics to even guess what the issue is. lol Everything on my journey has been learning about producing sound not recording it.What I like about this.First and foremost. This is coming with a 48v 5Apower supply out of the box. Manufacturers always like to claim what their amps can put out but then leave it to the fine print that you need the max power supply that the amp can handle to get that. And although this isn't coming with the max. A 48v 10A is the max. Most and that's most by a wide majority are only coming with 32V 5A power supplies out of the box and then you have to go off and buy another PSU to get the max out of the amp. A 48V 5A is pretty close enough to the max. I didn't try it with this A5 Pro but I did on one of my Fosi and I couldn't tell any difference between a 48V 10A and a 48V 5A.This has PFFB. Out of all the others I've tried, only the Fosi V3 mono which is running my center speaker has it. It definitely helps and that's why I stuck with it for such a key speaker like a center rather than going back to the Denon to run the center.Background noise (static/hiss when a speaker is powered but no sound signal is being actively sent) is almost nill. It's on par with the Denon. Which is to say I have to put my ear right up on a speaker to hear it.Bass and Treble knobs have an easily felt detent at the 12oclock position. So you can easily feel when you've set either back to 0. A lot of people want as flat a response as possible, myself included as I want the Denon to being doing that sort of work. So ideally we want tone controls off. Although you can't set it to turn off tone controls like you could on one of the other amps I've tried. Setting it to 0 is the next best thing so being able to easily tell that's where you are is nice.Build quality is solid.Though I haven't yet gone down the rabbit hole of different op-amps. I appreciate how easy this makes it for changing them out. All the other's I've tried have to be taken apart to get to them.I like that with a few simple flips of the dip switches you can change the lighting of not just the front LED that all similar mini class D amps have, but that it also has 3 internal LED which adds to the aesthetics which is a nice touch. Especially for PC gaming rooms that have a lot of RGB or ARGB LED bling like mine does. I like that I'm able to match this with the color scheme I'm running which is primarily blue.I like the sound from it.What I don't like about it.It's running hotter than the Douk M1 Max. Not terribly hotter but definitely more hot. It's the hottest of all the mini class D I've tried. I think it's due to being smaller than any I've tried except the Fosi V3 mono, and that it has the window on top instead of more metal that can act like a heat sink. Smae thing with being larger and having more metal. Just guessing on that last part but hot and electronics generally don't mix. I honestly can't say if it'll be an issue. I've added 120mm PC fans that blow across the mini class D that I use. As well as more fans on my Denon so for me at least heat isn't much of an issue.I would have liked to see a hinge on the window covering instead of it just sitting there in place with gravity. I could have used the sticker that came with it as a hinge but that takes away from it aesthetically. That's pretty much a nothing burger but it's at least something that I don't like.All ...
